About Harmonium

Harmonium is also known as Melodeon or Pump organ which is a lot like organ. It makes sound by blowing air through reeds. These reeds tuned to different pitch to make musical sound. The tuning of harmonium is limited to 12 tones versus 22 shruti required as per hindustani classical music, which gave an Indian flavor.

These 22 shrutis of harmonium enables the Ragas which is constant with tanpura. Harmonium is made of copper and brass. It has piano like body which usually is elaborating carved in the fashion of clay. A standard harmonium always has a wooden box, handles to move instrument, bellow keys, stops, reeds, coupler, reed board and scale changer.

To play harmonium, sitting position is must to be followed, where it is placed on the ground. Right handed person uses right hand for keys, and left hand is use for pumping bellows notations are use to describe keys on keyboard. Fingering system of keyboard and harmonium is same, so can play both instruments.
